An individual athlete, a whole team and a multi-game event need different briefs. Start by explaining whose story you want documented and whether the priority is action, portraits, team interactions or a mix.

Make athletes easy to identify
For individual coverage, provide the player’s name, jersey number and team colours. Include any changes between games. For a team, identify an organizer who can help coordinate a group photograph and explain where it can fit into the schedule.
Share priority athletes or moments without assuming a particular play or result can be guaranteed. Sports photographs depend on the action and the access available.
Plan around the actual schedule
- Date, sport, venue and field or court location
- Warm-up and game times, including breaks

- Team portraits or presentations that need a planned time

Allow for the moments around the action
Warm-ups, reactions, celebrations and interactions can give context to game photographs. Tell the photographer whether these matter to your brief, alongside close action or individual portraits.
For a tournament, movement between fields and simultaneous games can affect what is possible. Set priorities rather than assuming every moment across several games can be covered.
